Photo Feedback Week 1

Monday, February 13, 2012

Greetings friends! It's a new week and a new weekly link up. I'm excited to participate in the Photo Feedback blog hop hosted by Kim at Mom Tried It. If you've visited here before you know that I have found a passion for photography and have been working really hard to learn all I can and improve my skills. One of the things I need most at this point is honest feedback from a critical eye. While it can be scary to put your work out there and ask how it can be improved, I think it is vital to the learning process.

I love all the support and comments I have gotten from the blogging community and from my family. However, as Kim points out, kind comments can go a long way to boost your confidence but they don't always help you hone your skill. That's way I was thrilled when Kim told me she'd be hosting this hop. Today marks the first week, so if you'd like to participate, stop by Kim's place for more info or simply read the rules and link up below.

ISO 100, 50 mm @ f/2.2 1/800 sec

Here are the guidelines for Photo Feedback:The photo you submit must be your own.
  • The photo can be new or old, edited or SOOC, never a theme to adhere to.
  • When leaving feedback be sure to say something you like about the photo along with something you would suggest to improve the photo.
  • If you join in, please visit a couple of other participants too.  They want feedback just like you do.
  • Please link back in your post with text or grab the button.
  • Only ONE photo per blog post, please.  This way we know without a doubt which photo to critique.

I also loved Kim's idea of a feedback photo challenge. I'll be sure to post an image in a few days, I want to participate this every week! - Giving feedback with improvement ideas takes a bit of getting used to though... but I'll try!

First of all, I love the simple beauty of this image. The light from the back, how it highlights the hair. The colors are rich and warm. What I'm wondering is the focus - the face might be a bit more sharp? The curls on the left seem to be in perfect focus, but the eyes and the face are a bit blurrier (or is it just me...?). Or maybe it is a lack of light on the face, maybe you could have used a reflector to give the face some light? - Another thing that I love is the depth of field, just beautiful!

Isn't that face adorable?!
First I love the aperture you set this at. I think the depth of field is perfect and the background is free from distractions. Great job!
I a little further out shot (or crop) would make this shot more interesting. You have her composed nicely in the frame, but I would like to see a little more space above her head and on each side.

I definitely know how difficult photographing a toddler can be, so you did a great job capturing her and the expression is priceless.
If you are ever feeling extra brave, maybe try a small piece of white foamboard to reflect some of that beautiful backlight onto her face and make her eyes really pop with brighter catchlights. But that is being super ambitious on a toddler shoot. Not the same as my feedback above, just something if you ever want to try. ;)

I agree with much of Kim's feedback: I would also like to see this shot zoomed out a bit for more space around the head, and reflecting more light on her face would make this a truly fantastic photograph. You can fix that lighting issue in post-processing if you have photoshop or lightroom or something similar.

But those two minor things aside, this is an absolutely adorable photograph, with great backlighing and depth of field. I love the expression on her face!

I love this, she looks so sweet. The only thing I would change is to get a little more space around her head. The top of the frame is cutting some of her wispy curls off, and I'd love to see those curls entirely in the photo. It would be nice to see her face brightened up a bit, too. This is such a great image, though, it seems like you really captured her personality!

Well, you know this isn't my thing, but I sure appreciate a beautiful baby. ;)

You have a great photo of your toddler - and those are always hard to get! Great dreamy look in the eyes and nice backlighting on the hair. It would be even better with a fill flash or a reflector on the face. That might help soften the shadow and even the hair highlights. BTW, I love how you softened the background.
