Welcome to this edition of Quotable Sunday. I hope you leave here today feeling a little lighter than when you arrived.
"This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind...let it be something good."

Love the earth and sun and animals,
Despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks,
Stand up for the stupid and crazy,
Devote your income and labor to others...
And your very flesh shall be a great poem.
Walt Whitman
Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete.
If you're alive, it isn't.
Richard Bach
"I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."
Jack London
"The day will come when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides and gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire."
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
"If you cannot be a poet, be the poem."
David Carradine
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive."
Howard Thurman
Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is bliss, taste it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.

Friday Photo Flashback
Here I am, baby baldilocks circa 1973. I just love the background in flashback photos. The wallpaper, the burnt orange shag carpet, the wicked cool mustard colored appliances and matching garbage can...it doesn't get any better than that!

Aloha Friday
In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.
My question this week: Does the ice cream man come by your house with Brown Mules Nutty Buddies, Chocolate Eclairs, Bomb Pops, Push Up Pops? What's your favorite ice cream/frozen novelty?
Mine has to be the Chipwich...a handful of heaven, although as a kid, I often ordered a Push Up Pop.

JFK's Birthday
Thursday, May 28, 2009
I try to keep politics off of my blog. I get enough of an earful at home, lol. But, no matter where you stand, left, right or in between there's no denying history, and that does have a place here!
John F. Kennedy's birthday is May 29th. Why not dig into some history and some cake? (Any excuse for cake will do for me...I'm easy that way).
Speaking of eats, what did JFK like? According to his presidential library, for breakfast he did like, ..."orange juice, poached eggs on toast, crisp broiled bacon, marmalade, milk and coffee. For lunch, President Kennedy was particularly fond of soup--New England Fish Chowder was a favorite. He has been described as a "soup, sandwich and fruit" man for lunch--always soup though. For dinner there were no particular favorites, although he did like lamb chops, steak, baked chicken and turkey (white meat) and don't forget mashed potatoes. He also was fond of seafood and baked beans. According to chefs who worked in the White House, President Kennedy liked corn muffins too---so did Calvin Coolidge. For dessert, if he had it, it would likely be chocolate. President Kennedy was a small eater; he often had to be reminded that it was dinner time... politics always took preference over food."
Some other fun facts? He was born in Brookline, MA, was Catholic, attended Harvard, reached the military rank of Lieutenant, and established the Peace Corps in 1961.

Wordful Wednesday
Tuesday, May 26, 2009
My "bid dirl" will be turning 4 next week. Four?! Hard to believe. I know all moms say that at nearly every birthday, but it is so true. The time passes in a blink. She was my sweet baby pixie just an instant ago and now she's a big girl, leading the pack toward the goal in soccer, defending herself from her brothers all on her own, swinging high on the swings without a "head push start" from mom, writing her name, opening the browser and finding Dora games online while I'm cluelessly folding laundry in the other room... She's miss self-sufficient (and don't dare call her little miss anything). Thank goodness she regularly tells me she "wubs" me or I'd really start to feel like an unnecessary attachment, lol.
Look! A Linky!

Please Help Spread Awareness, Love, Prayers and Hope
This post is reprinted with permission from Manic Mother in order to spread awareness.
Please help my family kick Cancers Ass
I don’t even know where to start this post…its going to be hard to write, as I am already choking back tears and haven’t finished the first sentence. I am taking some hours away from the hospital, to write this and to try to clear my head.
As many of you know my youngest son was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) 2 days ago, the day my world fell out from under me.
We took him to the Dr. the other day because he was bitten by either a spider or a tick. Shortly after we noticed the bites we saw he wasn’t feeling well, kind of lethargic, and not eating much, he also was limping in one leg. I assumed he was having a reaction from the bites.
They did an x-ray of his legs to make sure he hadn’t fractured anything as a precautionary measure. The x-ray showed he had some abnormalities in his bones.
We are in the grocery store and I get a call from his pediatrician, he tells me I need to take him to the ped. oncology tomorrow. That it could be cancer. My world is spinning now, we walk away from our filled grocery cart, and head back home. Panic starts to set in.
It still is not making any sense. Ezra has been a perfectly healthy baby. He shows none of the typical symptoms of ALL. Besides being pale (but we all are), and the limp that just showed up. He is healthy, or so I thought. How do you go from a limp to leukemia?
After seeing the pediatric oncologist we are still hopeful, since he also says he doesn’t see any of the symptoms. So they take some blood and we are on our way.
That night we get a call from him, and our told to take him to the ER. We rush our baby off in the middle of the night. At the ER my husband and I have to endure things no parent should ever have to see, I don’t think I can go into detail. Just imagine blood curdling screams from your baby, like nothing you have ever heard.
We are told later that night that it probably is leukemia. Still have to wait for final lab results though. Sure enough he has cancer. Holy shit, my baby has cancer.
He is doing good so far, he had surgery to place a port in his chest so they can administer the chemo, and that went well. He has had 2 rounds of chemo already, and is staying tough.
His spinal test came back negative, meaning the cancer had not yet spread to his spine and brain…we caught it really early.
Thank you spider.
The type of leukemia he has is the most treatable type, it has the highest remission and cure rate. Silver lining perhaps?
That doesn’t take away from the fact that he now faces 3 years of chemotherapy. 3 years.
Here is where we need your help.
We are by no means financially well off. I stay at home with the boys, and my husband works PT and goes to school FT. We live off of his little pay and student loans.
We also share a car.
We can’t afford a new one…or even a used one. I am going to be taking Ezra to the Dr. 2-3 times a week, there is no way we can share a car, with my husband having to go back and forward from school and work. Not to mention if he gets a fever I have to take him to the Dr. ASAP.
His insurance should cover all of his medical bills. Its just the other things we can’t afford.
We also need to make my home more suitable for Ezra, I need to have the plumbing, and ac serviced to make sure it is clean. Any bacteria infection can kill him. We just don’t have the funds to do so. Yes, my family is helping out some, but their means are limited as well. Not to mention much of their money will be spent flying down to help me (they live in MN).
I am a proud person, I do not like being a charity case. But given the current situation, I am swallowing my pride, and asking for any help you can give.
Even if its only a dollar, I would be thrilled.
If you don’t have a dollar (I know I don’t) , please help out by blogging about this, tweeting, stumbling, etc. I have seen how Mommy bloggers rally to help each other out in times of need, and I know you will all do the same for us.
I am putting a paypal button in this post for donations, and there will also be one up in my sidebar, which I know works. I don’t know if this one will work, its so confusing and my head hurts, but we need help ASAP so I am trying to muddle through this.
Please help in anyway you can, thanks so much, and keep the prayers and thoughts coming.

It's Recipe Swap Monday at Our Chaotic Life

My friend Anissa at Our Chaotic Life hosts a weekly recipe swap and I'm joining in the fun and yum! Pop over to Anissa's for some great treats!

I have chosen to share a shortbread cookie recipe because you can never have enough cookies :D This one is so easy and kids love it.
You'll need:
1 1/4 c all purpose flour
1/4 c superfine sugar
1/2 c (1 stick) butter - use the real stuff!
You can add your choice of extracts, mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, sprinkles, raisins, candy bits, or color with food coloring. I like to use 1 tsp almond extract.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
All you do is put all the ingredients in a medium bowl and rub it between your fingertips until crumbly. If you are adding flavors or candy mix the first three ingredients first then add your yummies. After it is mixed and crumbly, squeeze it to form a ball, then roll it out on waxed paper sprinkled with additional flour. Roll to about 1/2 in thick. Use star cutters, or any you like, to cut out shapes. Place on non-stick baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes. Remove and cool on rack. You can add cookie icing if you like, but they are great without it.
Happy Memorial Day!

Welcome to the Memorial Day edition of Quotable Sunday!
On thy grave the rain shall fall from the eyes of a mighty nation! ~Thomas William Parsons
Although no sculptured marble should rise to their memory, nor engraved stone bear record of their deeds, yet will their remembrance be as lasting as the land they honored. ~Daniel Webster
With the tears a Land hath shed
Their graves should ever be green.
~Thomas Bailey Aldrich
Are they dead that yet speak louder than we can speak, and a more universal language? Are they dead that yet act? Are they dead that yet move upon society and inspire the people with nobler motives and more heroic patriotism? ~Henry Ward Beecher
Green sods are all their monuments; and yet it tells
A nobler history than pillared piles,
Or the eternal pyramids.
~James Gates Percival
Is't death to fall for Freedom's right?
He's dead alone who lacks her light!
~Thomas Campbell
For love of country they accepted death... ~James A. Garfield
They fell, but o'er their glorious grave
Floats free the banner of the cause they died to save.

Yum-O Muffin Recipe
Saturday, May 23, 2009
I am not a big breakfast eater. Never have been. Whenever I eat a big breakfast, I always feel sluggish and full and yucky. I generally have coffee+++ and a piece of bread or a bagel or something. Occasionally, I will make breakfast for dinner, which is a big hit at our house...eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc. On holidays and long weekends, however, I do like to make something special. It usually involves an egg casserole (hubbie's fav) and some sweet bread, muffins, or coffee cake. I am a sucker for all things sweet, and pastries and cake are hard to resist! It's all really dessert dressed up for morning, right?
This weekend I wanted to try a new recipe and I found a winner! It's like muffins and doughnuts rolled into one, a perfect pairing for your favorite morning beverage. Speaking of, have you tried Celestial Seasonings Organic coffee? Yep, the tea people make coffee and it is yummy. I am a huge Starbucks fan, but I gotta say, the Celestial Seasonings Morning Thunder rocks. Grab some if you see it in the store.
Ok, here's the recipe. I found it on Horizon Organic's website:
These sweetly spiced treats taste just like freshly made doughnuts.
Yield: 12 muffins
Prep time: 25 minutes
Baking time: 20 minutes
Difficulty Level: Easy-Moderate
Muffins:
* 1/2 cup Horizon Organic® milk, whole or reduced fat
* 1 Horizon Organic egg
* 1/3 cup Horizon Organic butter, melted and cooled
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest, optional
* 1-1/2 cups flour
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
For rolling:
* 1-1/2teaspoons ground cinnamon
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 1/3 cup Horizon Organic butter, melted
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or coat each cup with cooking spray.
In a small bowl whisk together milk, egg, butter, vanilla and orange zest until well combined. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Gently stir in egg mixture, mixing just to combine. Batter will be lumpy and thick.
Divide batter evenly between muffin cups, filling each 1/2 full. Bake for 20 minutes until tops spring back and muffins are golden brown.
Meanwhile, melt remaining 1/3 cup butter in a small bowl. In a separate bowl combine cinnamon, sugar and vanilla. When muffins are done, remove them from the pan and allow to cool until they are easy to handle, about 5 minutes. Dip each muffin in butter, then roll in cinnamon sugar mixture. Serve while warm.

Friday Flashback Photo
Friday, May 22, 2009
Ok, another meme, I know. Some of you must be groaning. But I am having such fun meeting new friends this way...and this one had me at the name. Flashback? I'm a sucker for all things nostalgic and just look at the button! We had that camera. And I promise if you follow along you'll get to poke fun at me :)
So my Friday Photo Flashback is a pic of me holding my little sister when she was a babe and I was in kindergarten, circa 1978. I actually remember this photo. I was on my way to school, (first day maybe) and upset that I couldn't stay home with mom and the baby. Check out the dress, the couch, the awesome wood paneling and that hair. Nice wings! Aqua Net, yeah baby. Little' Sis is sporting the baldilocks. Too cute!
So what were you doing in the Fall of '78?

Thousand Words Thursday
Thursday, May 21, 2009
This is a picture of my dad, my younger sister (isn't she purty!) and I. I chose this photo because unfortunately, I don't have many photos of my dad and I together. He drove down last week for my husband's graduation and we had a great time together.
I have the utmost respect for my dad and I love that he is so great with my kids. Seeing him interact with them reminds me of playing with him when I was growing up. My parents divorced when I was 12, and I missed out on a lot of time with him. Since I'm usually the one behind the camera, I just don't have a lot of photos of us together. So, I am treasuring this one. And my sister, well she just rocks and I love her so!

Memorial Day
Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Memorial Day is upon us. It is one of my favorite holidays. Really. It marks the beginning of summer: warm days, bbq's, trips to the beach, and long evening walks. The holiday itself always gets my patriotic pride swelling with parades, air shows, and lots of red, white and blue. Sort of a prelude to the big bang on the 4th of July.
Although the holiday is marked with ceremonies and parades in nearly every town in the U.S., there are also plenty of online resources to help you celebrate in style. You can take a virtual tour of Arlington National Cemetery, for example. Or, visit History.com's Memorial Day mini-site for the history of Memorial Day, War History videos, and a look at some famous battle maps. You might also visit The Department of Veterans Affairs for information on veteran statistics and memorial sites.
There are tons of online resources for teaching, such as themed units, and coloring pages, word searches, crafts and poems.
And what national holiday would be complete without a good old fashioned American barbeque? Check out this site for awesome burger recipes. Don't forget the potato salad and dessert.
If you really want to go big, go here. But, any way you go, make it a fun, fabulous family weekend!

Wordful Wednesday
Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Welcome to this week's edition of Wordful Wednesday! *Wordful Wednesday is for those of us that like to showcase a photo(s) but that just can't seem keep our mouths shut about it(them).
Our favorite neighbors recently attended a church service that discussed looking at the positive side of life and seeing the "light" in every day things. Rose colored glasses were handed out to the congregation and our neighbors brought them to the kids. Jack tried them on and this was the result:
I guess they really work! (Now, if only they made rose colored contact lenses ;D)
